Locality
At the heart of the UK’s motorway and rail networks, Wolverhampton is a gateway between the historic Black Country and the beautiful countryside of Shropshire and Staffordshire. Situated close to the M54, M6, M5, M42 and M40, the city offers excellent road links to all parts of the country - and the M6 Toll now offers a fast and effective route around Birmingham for car drivers heading to London or the East Midlands. The city is only 17 miles from the City of Birmingham, and benefits from both Virgin and Cross Country’s inter-city services and local services operated by London Midland. Wolverhampton’s train station is on the West Coast Main Line, with regular direct connections to Birmingham International Airport and Birmingham New Street. The City also enjoys express inter-city services to London Euston and to Edinburgh via Manchester Piccadilly. Journey times to London are under 2 hours.
Birmingham International Airport is just 30 minutes away by direct train link and 45 minutes by road, serving the majority of national and international destinations. Manchester and Heathrow airports are also connected by express coach links from the city’s main bus station, and Stansted Airport can be reached by direct rail links.
Wolverhampton Business Airport is located close to the city at Halfpenny Green, with executive jets, air taxis and helicopter connections across the UK and Ireland.
The City includes the old centres of Bilston, Wednesfield and Tettenhall as well as the original town of Wolverhampton. City status was achieved in 2001 after a campaign led by the council. The area is part of the Black Country, with a heritage of heavy industry and component manufacturing for the car industry. There has been a decline in the traditional industries of the area, and this has provided an ongoing challenge for the Council. However, as one of Britain's newest cities, Wolverhampton has gone from strength to strength with massive investment from the public and private sectors creating an attractive environment and a wealth of opportunities for residents. Combine this with a vibrant mix of shopping, art, theatre, sport and nightlife and you can see why Wolverhampton is emerging as a great place to live in the 21st century.
